I wish more cooperative games allowed this type of freedom, and I highly recommend any future designers steal this system. None of this “take your turns clockwise” nonsense that we are used to experiencing. Heroes are free to reroll as many times as they like and openly discuss their feelings towards the situation. Now I have to give credit here because, in this part of the game, there are no turns. The important drawback here is that any Titan heads they roll must be given to the Titan player, who can then spend them to do various actions like eat a citizen, heal, or damage a hero. Each face of the die represents a different action, and the Heroes can reroll as many times as they like. After the Titan is done finalizing their choices, the Heroes start by rolling the dice. These cards aren’t activated right away, as they act as incoming threats to the heroes and represent the telegraphed moves of these goliath Titans. The Titan player starts the round off by playing two cards from their hand, one face up and one face down. This mismatch of mechanics neatly encapsulates the contrast between the towering Titan and the vulnerable yet crafty Heroes, echoing the themes of the show. ![]() Further highlighting the asymmetry, the Titan utilizes card-based actions, while the heroes rely on dice rolls to power their moves. The hero players win by depleting the Titan’s health to a “kill zone” between 1-3 points and then playing a tactic card to deliver the final blow. The Titan has three potential victory conditions: consume all citizens, demolish all cannons, or defeat a Hero. Meanwhile, the Titan player picks one out of four personalities, which serves as the game’s difficulty setting. Like most cooperative games, these Heroes have a special ability that breaks the rules of the game. Attack on Titan: The Last Stand is a lightweight 30-minute one-vs.-all, with one being the titan and the other players wearing the clothes of the heroes of the show. However, I can’t deny that a bunch of gals and guys slicing up a titan does sound like good board game material, and that’s what brings me here today. ![]() By the end of the first season, my response to any further discussions of the show was the world’s loudest shrug. While I was enthralled by the stunning animation and epic opening theme song, which I listened to frequently for months, the writing itself failed to draw me in. However, I have limited experience with the Attack on Titan franchise, having only watched the first season of the anime. As I write these reviews, I typically try to discuss how the game’s theme or history resonates with me personally.

My favorite larger format manuscript papers come from Archives in their two 18-stave editions, one spiral bound and one a score pad.Ī notable mention I want to include but have not yet used is the Leuchtturm1917 books. They don’t have a high sheet count but the price makes up for it. Their prices are super low, you can buy several and use one (or many) on a single project without breaking the bank. They were amazing!!! They immediately became, hands down, my new favorite way to capture ideas. I purchased the Notes small and Notes large formats to try. Google and Amazon are not fun when all you have to go on is “blue Notes manuscript paper.” Luckily somebody on Twitter ( Dr. Unfortunately that name wasn’t what you saw in the photo, you only saw a blue folio with the word “Notes” printed on it. One fortunate day on Twitter I saw a picture of the Henle Music Folios “Jotter for Notes”. Poor print quality usually ends up being a music stave which is too bold and dark, interfering with the legibility of the the music notation. A bad binding means a chunk of the page is inaccessible since it won’t lay flat. The most common offenses were bindings and poor paper/print quality. I tried many options, almost all were terrible. Once the Moleskine pocket-edition was removed I went to looking for a replacement. You can live an animator’s storyboard life with your music cards. Paper doesn’t crash or corrupt your file. Any idea that comes to mind can be scribbled without waiting for an app to open or any ungodly tech. ![]() Obviously, this sort of thing is ultimately, "up to your DM!", but I was hoping for some advice on how to make a variant light repeating crossbow that is reasonably balanced in game terms before I bring it to the DM for an official ruling. This seems by far the most powerful of the options I've considere, but could perhaps be balanced by requiring both the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Repeating Crossbow) feat and the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Double Crossbow) feat mentioned in this D&D web supplement article. This would be functionally equivalent to a magazine-limited version of the "Splitting" special weapon ability. Another option is to draw from real-life light repeating crossbows and make the light repeating crossbows fire two bolts simultaneously (with magazine capacity changed to six, eight, or ten bolts). This gives the light repeating crossbow a limited ability to be dual-wielded, giving it an advantage over the light crossbow.ģ. A more aggressive variant would be to make the light repeating crossbow's non-magazine reload a free action which can be done with one hand instead of requiring two hands, on the argument that since all the shooter has to do is cock the crossbow, one hand and a belt hook or similar aid will suffice. This makes the difference between the light repeating crossbow and the heavy repeating crossbow exactly equivalent to the difference between the light crossbow and the heavy crossbow, although a light crossbow with rapid reload is still strictly better than a light repeating crossbow.Ģ. The most direct possibility would be to make the light repeating crossbow magazine reload a move action instead of a full-round action. I've thought of a couple of ways in which a light repeating crossbow could be made useful and was hoping for some feedback/comments as to how these would affect game balance:ġ. Indeed, the light repeating crossbow is strictly inferior to a light crossbow because a light crossbow user can take the "Rapid Reload (Crossbow)" feat or the Quick-Loading magic weapon property in place of the "Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Repeating Crossbow)" feat. ![]() Whereas the "regular" light crossbow fires more rapidly than the heavy crossbow in exchange for having a shorter range increment and one "step" less damage, the light repeating crossbow offers no functional benefits whatsoever over its heavy counterpart. ![]() You can’t attack a target beyond the weapon’s long range. As a newcomer to D&D / Pathfinder, I was surprised and dismayed to see that the light repeating crossbow appears to be statistically useless. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. The first is the weapon’s normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon’s long range. Range. A weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack has a range in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. Loading. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make. Light. A light weapon is small and easy to handle, making it ideal for use when fighting with two weapons. A sling must be loaded to deal any damage when used in this way. If you use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a melee attack, you treat the weapon as an improvised weapon (see "Improvised Weapons" later in the section). Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. You have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield. Up to that day, there were things that puzzled and concerned me, abut for which I had no explanation. But that conversation left me far wiser, if sadder. ![]() Thirty years later, I found Art found this experience somewhat alarming. For the next hour at least, I asked questions. It quickly developed that the article these pictures would illustrate would be written by the man holding up a reflector made from foil-wrapped cardboard, San Diego's brand new Assistant Curator of Birds. He was photographing all the zoo's vultures. I, of course, wanted to know what his next ZooNooz project would be. Ron was standing in front of the great community aviary for birds of prey. So, when on the last of my several day's visit, I recognized Ron Gordan Garrison, the long-time photographer of the Zoological Society, I was delighted. I impatiently anticipated the arrival of each month's ZooNooz, the Zoological Society of San Diego's magazine, and spent any time I could reading back issues in the library of the San Francisco Zoo and the California Academy of Sciences. The year before, I got to make four separate visits from Berkeley, and the second of my 1974 visits lasted several days, thanks to family friends. When I was 14, I was obsessed with the San Diego Zoo the way other kids were with sports teams or rock bands. This was appropriate for a man who was in the forefront among a generation of bird curators who completely reshaped American zoo aviculture in the '70s and '80s. from UC Davis in 1970, he collected mammals in Namibia for the Smithsonian Institution and studied the hosts for scrub typhus in Pakistan, for the University of Maryland's School of Medicine.Įven though my perceptions at our first meeting were somewhat distorted, as I was 14 years old, Art's trademark game-showhost-good-looks, with his perfectly styled head of carroty hair and famous "1,000-Watt grin," coupled with a boyish enthusiasm and sometimes startling sense of humor, certainly conveyed youthfulness. He earned his Master's in Wildlife Management from the University of Arizona, in 1963, conducting field research on White-nosed Coatis. He was, in fact, 35 when he thus entered the zoo profession, having previously been involved in mammalogy. When I first met him, shortly after his arrival at the San Diego Zoo, as Assistant Curator of Birds, in 1974, I thought he was in his late twenties. I think most of us thought he was far younger. But many of his saddened friends were also startled to learn he was 70. Art Risser's death following a stroke on the day after Christmas 2008, was entirely unexpected. |
